Baltimore is a city with a history of greatness as a commercial, cultural and manufacturing hub that extends from the dawn of the country through the middle of the last century. The remnants of this prosperity remain evident to this day in Baltimore’s institutions and culture, its buildings and people – all awaiting a vision that can guide its rebirth and shape its future growth as a world-class metropolitan center.
Cities around the United States and Europe with similar pasts have built on the strength of these legacies to achieve economic and cultural vitality in the 21st century. Shaped by visionary policy and place-making, they reclaimed their prominence as centers of international trade and culture.
Two renowned architecture and urban design practitioners present their perspectives on the opportunities that exist in Baltimore for creating a world-class setting for the future growth and development. Based on intimate knowledge of cities around the U.S. and the world, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk and Thom Mayne offer their observations on the strengths that exist in Baltimore, and how cities like ours have overcome significant challenges to create places of lasting value for all their citizens.

Our civic leaders talk of adding thousands of families, bringing in new businesses and building a shared prosperity for the city. These two architects and urbanists have seen how it has been done elsewhere and can share with us insights gleaned from that experience. About the participants:
THOM MAYNE is a Pritzker Prize-winning architect and principal in Morphosis, a Los Angeles-based architecture firm with projects throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. In 1972, he helped found the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), where he taught for many years. Mayne has also held teaching positions at the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Harvard University, Yale University, the Berlage Institute in the Netherlands and the Bartlett School of Architecture in London.
ELIZABETH PLATER-ZYBERK is a founding member of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) and a leading international practitioner in the New Urbanist movement. Along with her husband, Andrés Duany, she founded the firm Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ) in 1980, which has subsequently completed over 200 projects, urban plans and model codes for communities throughout the U.S. and abroad. Plater-Zyberk also served as dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Miami for almost two decades (1995-2013) and founded its program in Suburb and Town Design in 1988.
